Transnational Networks
of the Radical Right
The empirical basis for the visualization of the transnational networks of the radical right presented here is an extensive collection of data on cross-border connections of more than 500 actors (individuals and organizations) and dozens of important international networking events (i.e., conferences) of the global radical right.
For the purposes of this website, the “radical right” are broadly defined as a group of political actors ranging from radicalized conservatives – such as the US Republican Party – to those right-wing extremists who focus on competing in the political sphere.
For the visualization of the transnational radical right networking, 54 actors (individuals and organizations) were selected, based on the extent and relevance of their cross-border activities.
Actors were categorized as follows:
- 10 (Christian) anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ, anti-feminism advocacy
- 20 Think Tanks / Foundations / Academia
- 14 Organizers / Networking
- 10 Influencers / Politicians [Speakers]
The strength of the 269 relationships between the selected 54 actors was measured according to the following scale, with 5 signifying the strongest relationship:
- 74 5. Formal agreement/Employment relationship/fellowship
- 36 4. Website inter-links/mentions; OR many joint activities (co-organizers); OR joint publications; OR substantial funding
- 31 3. some joint activities (co-organizers); OR less substantial funding
- 83 2. joint statements, OR many/frequent meetings, OR many/frequent joint conference appearances etc.
- 45 1. some/occasional meetings, OR some/occasional joint conference appearances etc.
The website offers three different modes of visualization of the transnational networks of the 54 selected radical right actors, all allowing for individual (color-coded) settings in terms of category, actor type, country:
In addition, the modes “force network” and “group relations” allow for individual settings in terms of the strength of the relationship.
